Editor and Translator for English Academic Publications m/f

Aufgaben

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative and Private International Law in Hamburg, Germany is one of approximately eighty research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of the Sciences e.V. The Institute is dedicated to foundational research especially in the fields of foreign private and private international law as well as the law of civil procedure.

Our Editorial Unit is looking for an

Editor and Translator for English Academic Publications m/f
for a part-time position (19.5 hours/week, at the Institute) that is initially limited in its term.

Your role

  • Language editing for English-language books and papers written by our researchers as well as for informational material about the Institute
  • Translating academic and informational texts from German to English
  • Assisting authors with English publishing projects and presentations

Your background and skills

  • Bachelor´s degree in Law (exceptionally qualified candidates with a degree in the Humanities will also be considered)
  • Experience (min. 3–5 years) editing and translating academic texts
  • Substantial experience with legal terminology
  • Exceptional written and spoken English skills (native speaker level)
  • The confidence and ability to communicate with an international and accomplished pool of researchers
  • Good command of written and spoken German
  • Good command of Microsoft Office programs, especially Word

Additional qualifications in translation or editing, a working knowledge of other European languages (in addition to German) and experience with supporting technology such as document management systems would be an advantage.

If you enjoy being a part of a team, working in an academic environment, and carrying out complex publication projects, you could be a successful candidate.

We offer a limited-term contract with the prospect of becoming permanent. You will have a considerable degree of flexibility in setting your Institute schedule. The salary is in accord with the German public service salary scale TVöD (Bund) and its social benefits.
